The Societies
What does your character think about the secret societies?:
He thinks they sounds interesting but not the type of thing he’d ever be invited to join. He imagines it’s more something his brother would have liked and he wouldn’t be surprised if his brother was in one of them, but it’s not something he would ask nor something Calvin would share. He thinks the rumours about make them sound horrible and hopes that they aren’t true because that would be bad for the people being hazed.
Personality & History
Personality:
Franklin Crabbe isn’t the cleverest of people. Academics have never been his strong point and he doubts that they ever will be. He is gullible and will believe almost anything you tell him. He also doesn’t understand the meaning of most ‘big words’ and so often misinterprets what other people are saying because he makes up his own meanings for words or gets words confused with other words. He also has a habit of hearing a big word and then using it, despite not knowing what it means or what context it is meant to be in, in an attempt to make himself sound smarter. This means that sometimes what he is saying makes no sense to people who know the actual meanings of the words he is using.
What Franklin lack in intelligence he makes up for in loyalty and good intentions. He has a very strong opinion on what he thinks is wrong or right, and while it may sometimes differ from other people’s opinions, he tries to always stick to his morals. He is not afraid to speak up when he thinks something is wrong and isn’t discouraged by people not listening to or agreeing with him. As a friend Franklin is very dependable, although it can take him time to warm up to people he doesn’t know very well because he’s a little wary of some people (especially slytherins, even though he knows it’s wrong to be prejudiced!) because of his brother. Once friends with Franklin you can be sure that he’ll do almost anything for you, as long as it doesn’t go against his morals.
Franklin is extremely easy going and would rather go with the flow and not cause a fuss, unless it’s about something he really cares about or has a strong opinion about. He’s a people pleaser and doesn’t like it when people don’t like him so tries to do whatever other people want to get them to like him. This makes him a bit of a push over, which some people try to take advantage of. He doesn’t like to make decisions and prefers to let others take leadership roles in social situations.
The idea of adventure and excitement is something that really appeals to Franklin and one of his favourite hobbies is exploring the castle. This adventurous spirit can get him into trouble sometimes, when he gets caught out after curfew or exploring rooms he shouldn’t be in, but detention has never been a deterrent for Frank as the excitement is well worth the punishment.
All in all, Franklin is a good humoured guy who enjoys hanging out with his friends or planning adventures. He loves a good laugh and can always be counted on if you need someone to play a game or try something new and adventurous out with. He also loves food but is petrified of fire!
History/Significant Events:
The Crabbe and Goyle families had been good friends for years, both being of similar social classes. With their sons, Vincent and Gregory, being such great friends, it just made sense for Gregory’s younger sister, Gloria, to be promised to Vincent. It was just a shame that Vincent only had an older brother, not a sister, for Gregory.
The plan to have Vincent marry Gloria suffered a setback when Vincent set himself on fire tragically died in the war but after a discussion between the two families, it was decided that Gloria would marry Vincent’s older brother, Victor instead.
Victor was pleased with this new arrangement. Although he was the eldest child, he felt like he’d always been overlooked because of Vincent’s friendships with families such as the Malfoy’s. Gloria knew she had very little say in the situation anyway and was pleased by the fact that Victor seemed to be slightly brighter than his younger brother.
Their first child, Calvin, was born a little over a year after the wedding. Growing up he was doted on by his parents and grandparents. Used to receiving all the attention, Calvin was not happy when four years later his little brother was born.
Although Calvin still received a lot of attention after Franklin’s birth, he was always resentful about having to share and so picked on Franklin a lot. He would always act innocent and be really nice to Franklin when their parents were around but when no one was looking he would bully him. No one believed Franklin when he tried to claim that Calvin was being mean, because everyone loved Calvin and thought he was the greatest.
Calvin was extremely happy when his brother left for Hogwarts. It was nice to not have to be scared in his own house, but he always dreaded when Calvin would come home for the holidays.
When it was time for Franklin to go off to Hogwarts he was very nervous. His parents told him not to worry; he’d have his older brother to look after him, which just made Franklin more anxious. Luckily, at the sorting ceremony, he was sorted into Gryffindor, away from his brother. Although he knew he wouldn’t be able to always avoid his brother, being in a different house (especially one that most Slytherins seemed to dislike so much) would at least make it easier.
Aside from occasional run ins with his brother, Franklin’s first three years at Hogwarts were rather uneventful. He did struggle a lot in most of his classes and always preferred the hands on type classes like CoMC or Herbology to things like History. Wand work was never really his strong point either so he did struggle with Transfiguration and charms too. He often found himself staying at school during the holidays to avoid his brother and took to exploring the castle. He would like to be able to say he’s been all over the whole castle by the time he leaves.
Fourth year was a much better time for Franklin! Although he still had difficulties with his classes, not having to worry about his brother anymore made him more relaxed and a more cheerful, easygoing person in general. With his brother still living at home, going home for holidays was still not really an option but he’d started to really enjoy being able to stay at the castle so he didn’t mind too much.
This year Franklin is a bit worried about OWLs! He knows that they are important but he also knows that he’s not likely to do very well. He’s started studying a little more than usual but he’s not sure it will help. Apart from the stress of OWLs he is enjoying being a fifth year!
List five to ten goals for your character to pursue during the course of the game. Then pick the most interesting one and tell us 1) what your character's motivation for achieving it is and 2) what obstacles you see them having to overcome to get what they want.
Explore the whole castle before he graduates!
Convince his parents to make his brother move out of home already!
- It’d be nice to actually want to go home for the holidays. Plus his brother’s like 20 now, shouldn’t he have moved out already? This will be hard to accomplish because his parents think Calvin is great and like that he still lives at home and don’t understand why Franklin wants him gone.
Do well in CoMC for OWLs.
Win a Gobstones tournament before graduating.
Pick a career
Just have fun
- He’s only fifteen, he doesn’t want to take life too seriously, he just wants to have fun with friends and be a normal teenage boy. Studying and planning for the future should be secondary to just having a good time in his opinion.
