The Societies
What does your character think about the secret societies?:
Before she was tapped she didn't even care about them. She heard people gossiping about them and everything but just assumed it was all rumours, and even if it wasn't, never expected to be tapped or anything. When she was tapped, she was surprised and excited. She realised she could use it as a way to get into a career she liked and earn a lot of money. She still acts like she doesn't believe in them though, as not to seem suspect.
[Society Members] Society: Circle of the Heliopath.
[Society Members only] Why was your character selected to be in this society?: Sara is smart and hardworking and wants to be successful. She may be happy to not receive a ton of recognition, but she's not happy being unsuccessful.
[Society Members only] Why did/does your character want to be in the society?: Before she was tapped? She didn't because she didn't believe they existed. After, she realised it was a way to make sure she succeeded in life and so was eager to join. Plus it was a good way to make more friends.
Personality & History
Personality: One of the first things people notice about Sara is that she is always doing something. She's not one for sitting still and just listening. If she's in a situation where this is what she's meant to do, she starts doing things like plaiting and unplaiting her hair multiple times, looking for split ends, fixing her nails or just tapping or foot or fingers. She was never good at theoretical subjects during Hogwarts, actually having to DO something to be able to understand it properly. When doing practical work, Sara catches on very quickly and doesn't need too much instruction, but no matter how many times she tried to learn the things taught in History of Magic, it never seemed to stick and she'd blank every time she was tested on it.
Although very talented when it came to her practical classes, Sara was never one to point out how well she did at anything. She is modest and is proud enough of herself for doing well that she doesn't need approval or recognition from other people to feel like she's done well. Her parents used to (and still do) brag about her and she finds that embarrassing and so hates both bragging herself and when people brag to her. She's happy to work behind the scenes and let other people take the credit. Because she doesn't make a big deal about her successes, people who don't know her very well often don't realise how smart she really is. This doesn't bother her though, if people want to believe she's not clever, that's fine with her. Confident in herself, what other people think has never been something Sara worried about.
Sara seems to never tire and be full of energy. She's the type of person who could spend all day with friends and then stay up all night trying to finish homework due the next day and still wake up the next day as cheerful and energetic as ever. She actually likes waking up in the morning and is not one to laze around in bed for hours, but she also likes staying up late. Every so often she has days where she just sleeps to regain her energy, but for the most part she's good at living on little sleep. Sara never turns down opporunities to spend time with her friends, even if she does have work to do as she knows that (usually) she manages to pull off doing both.
Sara is easily excited, even by little things. She's prone to over using exclamation marks and coloured inks (although she uses the coloured inks all the time anyway) when writing and talking very fast and loud when she is excited. She's also been known to clap her hands or jump up and down in excitement. She's rather enthusiastic and enjoys sharing things that she's found exciting with others, even if they're not likely to find it as exciting.
Very direct, Sara can somethimes come off as blunt. She doesn't see the point in wasting time dancing around what you're really trying to say, preferring to just say it. This has caused her to come off as rude sometimes but she doesn't do it to purposely hurt peoples feelings. In fact, Sara hates hurting peoples feelings. Looking after her siblings so much when she was growing up has made Sara somewhat maternal. Not just towards her siblings either, but towards everyone including strangers and people older than her. She hates seeing people hurt and upset and will always offer to help them and try to look after them.
Sara is a bit of a skeptic. She doesn't believe just anything and likes to have proof to back up a claim. Sometimes she even likes to make sure the evidence has evidence too. All good claims need backing and a warrant after all! This is why, until tapped herself, Sara never believed in societies. Sure, people said they existed and there were a lot of rumours about what each society was like, but no one could say any of this was true because no one could say that they were a society member. She still enjoys arguing that there is no evidence that societies exist even though she is in the Circle. Not just skeptical about big things like secret societies, Sara also doesn't believe rumours or gossip or even just stories people tell her sometimes. The exception to this is if it is someone she trusts. In that case she doesn't need the supporting evidence, but if she finds out they were lying than she will quickly go back to needing proof.
History/Significant Events: Although Lawrence was a few years older than Cecelia, the two became friends in Charms Club. They lost touch once Lawrence graduated but, a few years after Cecelia finished school, they ran into each other and decided to renew their friendship by going out for a coffee to catch up. And then dinner the next night. And then again a few nights later. And again and again until they realised that, actually, they were dating. A few years after this, they married, then a couple of years after that, Sara was born.
Sara showed signs of magic from very early on. Her first occurence of accidental magic actually happened before she'd even left the hospital. Convinced this meant she was going to be a great witch, her parents spent a great deal of time doing activities with her that they had read helped with childhood development.
When she was four (and, as her parents would proudly tell anyone who would listen, beginning to be able to read properly) their second child, Jacqueline, was born. Then another two years after that, so was Mark. The Vaisey's had never had a lot of money, and with three young children, things were tight. Cecelia was only working part time so that she could look after the children, making things even harder. Despite the lack of money, Cecelia (and Lawrence when not working) made an effort to make sure their children were educated and had what they needed. If anything, Sara thinks the lack of money brought them closer, especially as she often had to help her mother out with the two younger siblings.
Although she loved her family, Sara was extremely happy to finally be going to Hogwarts. Her parents were convinced she was going to be sorted into Ravenclaw but Sara was not surprised when the hat instead placed her in Hufflepuff. She thought it was a good fit for her and she soon learnt that the other people in her house were pretty great too!
She spent her first year of Hogwarts just getting her footing. Although she wasn't a muggleborn and so the whole thing wasn't such a huge change for Sara, Hogwarts was still full of new experiences that took a while to get used to. Her second year, however, Sara decided would be a good time to join a club. She tried a few before settling on art club. While her parents hadn't been able to afford things like paints, her mother had often brough home coloured inks from work and playing around with them had always been one of her favourite hobbies so it made sense that she liked art club. She would not really call herself good at art though, she just liked playing with colours.
It wasn't until her fourth year that Sara decided that she'd like to be part of crew for drama. She'd always seen the school plays and musical and thought they were brilliant but wasn't really one for acting or singing so decided she wanted another way to be able to be involved. Sure, the art club got to help with painting sets but that still wasn't actually being part of drama club so you joined to help out with the crew.
Throughout her time at school, Sara worked hard and did well when necessary, like before tests and important pieces of homework, but always enjoyed spending time with friends more. With such great people around her she figured that was more important, as they wouldn't be at school forever and it would be nice to form friendships that would last once school was over.
In her sixth year, when tapped, Sara was very surprised, especially as she never believed that societies actually existed. However, once convinced that it was real and worthwhile, she was excited to join and really likes being part of the circle.
Leaving Hogwarts, Sara moved into Warrington House a lot of the other circle members. She didn't want to be a burden on her parents by living at home and she couldn't afford to live anywhere else so Warrington house was the perfect option for her. She knew she wanted to become a herbologist, so while still at school she had talked to Professor Hookum about maybe helping her husband out and learning something from him. Eventually, she agreed to pass on a letter to Tilden Toots and he owled back saying that he would help. Sara was extremely excited about this, sure Professor Longbottom was great but she was sure there was no one better than Tilden Toots to learn about Herbology from!
As working with and learning Tilden would not earn her any money, Sara also got herself a job at Scrivenshafts. She chose to work there because it's close to Warrington House, she knows about stationary shops thanks to her mum working in one (she does feel slightly bad about working for a competitor though) and because she does love coloured ink.
List five to ten goals for your character to pursue during the course of the game. Then pick the most interesting one and tell us 1) what your character's motivation for achieving it is and 2) what obstacles you see them having to overcome to get what they want.
- To become rich!
Motivation: She's sick of having no money, being rich would be great!
Obstacle: If it was easy, everyone would have millions of gallons.
- To discover a new plant, or at the least, a new use for a plant.
- To make sure there are SOME purebloods tapped in the next class.
Motivation: Sara knows that the muggleborns tapped to deserve to be in the circle, but as a pureblood herself, she doesn't think it's fair that purebloods are now not being tapped. That's still discrimination!
Obstacle: She has no control over tapping at all!
- Collect inks in as many colours as possible.
- Learn a foreign language.
